This grand period home in Ilkley had a beautiful vintage oak herringbone floor hidden for years under a tired, darkened finish, dulled and worn by decades of foot traffic through the hall and landing. Rather than lift and replace a floor that simply isn’t made like this any more, the owners asked us to bring the original parquet back to life.
Herringbone takes patience. We sanded the floor in multiple directions to work with the alternating blocks, using our dust-free system that captures up to 98% of airborne dust at the source, so the rest of the house stayed clean. Working through progressively finer grits, we stripped away the old finish, lifted decades of ingrained grime and took the parquet and its decorative border back to clean, bare oak.
With the rich grain of the oak revealed, we sealed the floor with a hard-wearing, low-VOC finish that brought back its warm golden tone and a soft, natural sheen. The result is a characterful herringbone floor, true to the age of the house and ready for many more years of busy family life.
